'Voices in the Gallery' investigates the voiceover as a phenomenon that exists simultaneously as art-form, literary genre and sonic intervention in the contemporary gallery space. By bringing together ideas and perspectives from art, literature and sound studies, this project uses the voiceover as a medium by which to explore how writing operates in art practices today.

This research will culminate in a book, as well as articles, talks, and an exhibition that will take place in Southampton in 2020. A programme of public events—workshops, screenings, study sessions—will be staged in conjunction with the project partners: John Hansard Gallery and Nottingham Contemporary.

This research project is funded by an AHRC Early Career Leadership Fellowship (2019-2021), led by Dr Sarah Hayden and hosted by the Department of English at the University of Southampton.
